Ways To Beat ATS
1. Use Relevant Keywords From The Job Description
Applicant Tracking Systems typically scan resumes for keywords, relevant skills, and qualifications specified in the job posting. This is why you must tailor your resume to the job description by taking out all irrelevant pieces of information. Focus on your skills and experiences that are transferable to the job you’re applying for. You can find relevant keywords by researching similar positions to gather additional keywords that might catch the attention of both the ATS and the Hiring Manager.
2. Apply For Jobs That You’re Qualified For
Since you’re dealing with AI software, it is highly unlikely that you can catch a Hiring Manager’s eye with your unrelated accomplishments. This is why it’s important to submit applications for jobs that match your work history, education, and skills. The Applicant Tracking Systems will have no option but to consider your application for the next stage since it’s likely that your qualifications have the same keywords as the job description.
3. Keep Your Resume Simple And Use Basic Formatting
While a visually appealing resume can catch the eye of a human recruiter, it may confuse or hinder Applicant Tracking Systems. This is why it’s important to make your resume as easy to read as possible. Focus on clarity and readability, using basic language to convey your qualifications effectively. Avoid graphics, charts, or excessive formatting that could be misinterpreted by the system. Doing this can help your application proceed to the next stage.
4. Don’t Apply For Too Many Roles At The Same Company
Even though it’s okay to apply for a few similar roles at a particular company, applying for too many can send the wrong message and negatively impact your chances. Human Resources professionals and Hiring Managers can log into the ATS at any time to sort through the submitted resumes. There, they have access to your application history and see how many roles you’ve applied for. If they see that you’ve applied for roles in multiple departments, it signals how unsure you are of your strengths.
5. Follow Instructions And Submit The Right Type Of File
Follow all application instructions carefully! If they ask for specific document formats or a cover letter, adhere to those requests. The better you follow instructions, the higher your chances of moving past the ATS to the next hiring stage.
